This trip I will not narrate in detail because not any of the three of you were on it. As you can see by the dates, and remembering Bill Jr. was born in 1951, you all were still pretty far from our minds. However, I thought you might be interested in knowing we went 2513.5 miles, averaging about 157 miles a day, we used 148 gallons of gas, averaging 16.3 miles per gallon, and we spent $122.97, averaging $7.68 per day. And, yes, we ate, slept and touristed (but we also spent some nights with relatives and ate off them some) . I kept records of this one VERY carefully. The reason was, of course, we had VERY little money. You might be interested in our first day. Our supper cost $2.15, and our cabin cost $4.50 for the night. We saw Judge Roy Bean's and one Burma Shave ad: Regardless of political views, all good men always choose Burma Shave. It was appropriate because Lyndon and Coke Stevenson "were doing something that day". I know this because I said in my journal, "I wonder how Lyndon and Coke are doing today". Driving into Big Bend we drove on a dirt road and saw a heard of wild donkeys. We hiked up to a good view of "the Window" that first evening in the park. Our cabin in the park cost $3.50. I couldn't figure our mileage while driving in the park because we wouldn't fill the tank with that high $.29 gas. Leaving the park I made the comment, "The thirty miles of unpaved road coming out didn't seem half so bad as coming in". Could be in two days you get sorta used to it. We didn't see any deer this morning even though we were up earlier than before but on the way out Bill and I named all the birds and animals we saw in the Park. It made quite a list. That night we slept at Balmorhea Park and swam with the big two and three foot catfish.
We visited Iris, Aunt Eula, Don and Cora, Pauline and Mayo, and Tom
and Mother Brooks. The prices of things are funny now, but the $6.54
car
repair bill in Anson to get the car to stop over heating almost blew
our
budget. We went to the Democratic
State Convention in Ft. Worth and saw
Johnson win the Democratic nomination for Texas. We even finagled
tickets
and got into the convention as "delegates". The trip was a fine, large
success. It was really our very first trip of any length since we were
married in 1944.
